Minority suspends planned protest against BoG Governor

The Minority in Parliament has suspended its planned protest against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, following a court ruling.

The court, hearing a police application to injunct the protest over security concerns, adjourned ruling on a preliminary objection raised by lawyers of the MPs to Friday, September 8.

The MPs, led by NDC’s Director of Legal Affairs, Godwin Edudzi Tamakloe, raised objection to the capacity of the Police to institute the action on their own accord.

According to him, per Article 88(5) of the 1992 Constitution and the State Proceedings Act, it is only the Attorney General that can institute the instant action.

The court, however, granted the adjournment.

Meanwhile, Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has assured their supporters that the protest will be held after the ruling of the court is delivered.

The protest was scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 5, at the Bank of Ghana headquarters in Accra.

The Minority in Parliament had accused the BoG of mismanaging the economy and called for the resignation of Dr. Addison.

The police had argued that the protest could lead to a breach of the peace and asked the court to injunct it.

The court’s ruling on the preliminary objection is expected to determine whether the protest can go ahead.
