I aspire to conclude my term with a sense of accomplishment and dignity – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo expressed his aspiration to conclude his term in office with a sense of accomplishment, having striven diligently for Ghana’s betterment. Drawing inspiration from 2 Timothy 4:7-8, he articulated his desire for his legacy to mirror the words of St. Paul, stating, “As my time in office comes to a close on January 7, 2025, I humbly wish to echo the sentiments of St. Paul: ‘I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now awaits the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the just Judge, will bestow upon me on that day—and not only upon me, but also upon all who have yearned for His appearance.'”

President Akufo-Addo conveyed these sentiments during a farewell service for Rev. Dr. Seth Kissi, the outgoing chairperson of the Akyem Abuakwa Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. This event took place in Kyebi, located in the Eastern region.

Having taken office on January 7, 2017, President Akufo-Addo entered with ambitious pledges, including the transformation of the economy within 18 months and the fight against corruption. These promises contributed to his and the ruling New Patriotic Party’s victory in the 2016 Presidential election.

While there have been accomplishments such as the successful implementation of the Free Senior High School policy, numerous Ghanaians have expressed disappointment with the economy’s lackluster performance and the rise in corruption cases.

Notably, Ghana experienced a notable year-on-year inflation spike, reaching a significant 54.1% in January 2023. Food inflation surged to 59.7%, while transportation costs skyrocketed by 71.4%.

The country found itself compelled to seek a $3 billion IMF bailout due to the economy’s unsustainable debt levels. In a commitment to the bailout’s conditions, the government initiated a demanding domestic debt exchange program.

In the face of these challenges, President Akufo-Addo remains steadfast in his belief in a swift economic recovery. He called upon the citizens of Ghana to join him in prayer, asking for divine guidance and the strength to fulfill their duties with humility and integrity, thereby steering the country toward positive change.

Addressing the congregants in Kyebi, he stated, “I beseech you to pray for both me and my appointed officials as we fulfill our roles with humility and integrity. Pray for the unity and peace of Ghana, as well as its continued advancement and prosperity. I retain my unwavering faith in the Almighty to guide our nation’s progress through proper policies, determination, and our dedicated efforts.”

President Akufo-Addo further urged Ghanaians to maintain their faith in his leadership, assuring them that Ghana will triumph over its present economic difficulties. He declared, “I implore all those gathered here to hold onto the conviction that Ghana’s future under H.E. Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo is secure. The battle is truly the Lord’s.”

In conclusion, President Akufo-Addo commended Rev. Dr. Seth Kissi for his commendable efforts in transforming the Akyem Abuakwa Presbytery, underscoring the importance of his contributions.
