The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has introduced its groundbreaking Spot Utility Billing System (SUBS), heralding a momentous shift in the billing process. This innovative solution, initially trialed in Accra’s Dome enclave, has rapidly been adopted across the entire nation.
Developed by the wholly Ghanaian-owned enterprise, Polymorph Labs Ghana Limited, the SUBS technology seeks to revolutionize billing procedures by swiftly generating invoices for customers through multiple channels, including printed documents, mobile text messages, and emails.
At its core, the SUBS system aims to rectify any disparities in ECG’s billing process by promptly identifying discrepancies for subsequent investigation.
Michael Agbo Tettey Soli, the Engineering Manager at Polymorph Labs Ghana Limited, expounded upon the system’s merits, underscoring its capacity to condense the conventional 30-day billing cycle to a mere 3 minutes.
This accelerated billing mechanism not only furnishes customers with real-time insights into their power consumption behaviors but also streamlines the entire user experience.
Citi News was granted exclusive access to the inner workings of the new software, revealing the seamless orchestration through which bills are instantaneously generated.
Empowered with the capability to oversee meters that have been successfully read and bills that have been issued, the District Commercial Managers at ECG now operate with enhanced efficiency. Consequently, the SUBS technology has considerably alleviated the burdens on meter readers and substantially curtailed paper-centric tasks by approximately 80 percent.
Michael Tettey reaffirmed the system’s robustness, providing assurance of its immunity to tampering.
While the present focus of SUBS technology rests on post-paid meters, the long-term vision encompasses the integration of prepaid meters as well. Customers have conveyed their admiration for this innovative stride, commending ECG for its forward-looking approach and urging the company to maintain this upgraded system, eschewing any reversion to the prior methodology. This transformative advancement not only amplifies billing efficiency but also signifies a momentous leap towards modernizing and optimizing Ghana’s power distribution sphere.
