NDC Plans $3 Billion Partnership with Private Sector for Advanced ICT Infrastructure

Former President John Mahama unveiled the National Democratic Congress’s ambitious plan to collaborate with the private sector in a groundbreaking initiative. In his keynote speech at the Academic City University College’s 2nd graduation ceremony, he announced a proposed investment of three billion dollars (US$3 billion) to establish an integrated ICT infrastructure. This project aims to encompass onshore and offshore fibre super-highways, as well as cutting-edge electronic applications.

The investment’s primary focus will leverage the power of 5G technology, revolutionizing communication, commerce, civil liberties, and individual expressions. Additionally, it seeks to support various national priorities, including advancements in health, education, agriculture, petroleum, and the power sectors.

Mr. Mahama emphasized that the initiative’s impact would extend beyond technological advancements. The integration of modern ICT infrastructure is expected to enhance governance, making it more effective, transparent, and accessible to Ghanaians. The project will also facilitate the modernization of industries and outdated legacy platforms and IT systems, while significantly improving network security. Furthermore, the venture is predicted to generate thousands of decent and sustainable jobs throughout the value chain.

The former President recognized the significance of education in driving progress and urged Academic City University College to embrace Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education. He asserted that STEAM provides a holistic approach to learning, breaking down traditional silos and fostering interdisciplinary knowledge and abilities.

Reminiscing about his own university journey, Mr. Mahama acknowledged the challenges he faced during his graduation decades ago. Through perseverance and determination, he successfully completed his studies, laying a strong foundation for further achievements. He attributed the quality of education he received to the opportunities that opened doors for him in his subsequent roles as a deputy minister, minister, Vice President, and ultimately, President of the Republic of Ghana.

Addressing the Class of 2023, the former President expressed confidence in their preparedness to tackle life’s challenges. He commended Academic City University College for equipping its students with the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute significantly to building a better Ghana and Africa for all
