Top Nigerian journalist explains purpose of the Islamic group that claimed to be funding Bawumia

A top journalist with the Sun Newspaper in Nigeria, Tosin Ajirire, has said that the main purpose of the establishment of the Islamic group based in Nigeria that claimed to be funding the campaign of Ghana’s Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is to achieve unity among leaders from northern Nigeria.

Speaking on News 360 on TV3 Wednesday, July 19, he said “This group was formed for the purpose of achieving unity among leaders of northern origin, to achieve unity and establish progress in the northern region, that is just what the group is for in Nigeria.”

Asked whether the group has any history of funding political parties, Ajirire said “No. They can’t fund a political party, even though some of their members can do so, that will be underground.

“They can’t come and say they are funding a political party, it is not constitutional in Nigeria but their members can contribute to some political members, not a party, as a group.”

Meanwhile, the camp of Dr Bawumia has vehemently dismissed the claim made by Nigerian journalist David Humdeyin that he is being funded by the group.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Bawumia Campaign has no funding or any linkage with any Islamic group in Nigeria or anywhere else,” the Vice President’s campaign team stressed on Wednesday, July 19.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Communication Directorate.

The statement accused David Humdeyin of making similar claims about some persons and groups in Nigeria without any basis.

Therefore, the campaign team of Dr Bawumia says it will not be distracted by the “obviously false” and “fabricated” claims which “only serves the propaganda purposes of its promoters”.

“The Bawumia Campaign is focused and will not be distracted by such vain untruths.

“The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has been very diligent and transparent from his days as a scholar, banker, and politician throughout his life and will not depart from these now and forever.”

The Vice President is currently in the Ashanti Region on the second leg of his campaign tour.

Speaking on the Hot Edition on 3FM Wednesday, July 19, Mr Mac Manu said “I associate myself with the response from the Bawumia campaign team that it is not true, absolute falsehood.”

He stressed, “I have the firm belief that what the Bawumia team has said is the truthfulness of the case, it is meant to tarnish the image of Dr Bawumia and the NPP, and we will not accept that.”
