NPP’s Steering C’tee meets following petition by some aspirants; others threaten withdrawal

The Steering Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is meeting today, Thursday, July 20, over the National Congress by the Special Electoral College scheduled for Saturday, August 26.

This follows a petition filed by some of the flagbearer aspirants, 3news.com has gathered.

The aspirants, according to close sources, are seeking a centralised National Congress by the Special Electoral College.

The petitioner aspirants claim it will be a waste of resources to decentralise the exercise.

As a result, they argue that a centralised congress will afford them the opportunity to address the delegates before the Congress.

This is coming from camps except that of the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the sources say, further disclosing that some are already threatening to withdraw from the race if their demands are not met.

They will also demand their filing fee after withdrawal, 3news.com gathers.

The Steering Committee’s meeting on Thursday will decide on the way forward.

That National Congress by the Special Electoral College is expected to whittle down the number of flagbearer aspirants to five after all 10 were cleared by the Vetting Committee as qualified.

The report, submitted to the General Secretary by the Chairman of the Vetting Committee, Reverend Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has already been considered by the National Council and the National Executive Committee (NEC).

The party had scheduled to release the list of all qualified aspirants on Friday, July 21 for balloting to take place on Monday, July 24.
