A member of the legal team of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has derided a suit filed by Daily Searchlight editor-in-chief Ken Kuranchie, in which he has prayed the Supreme Court to stop former President John Mahama from running for another term.
Mr Kuranchie, among others, is seeking a declaration that upon a true and proper interpretation of Article 66 (1) of the 1992 Constitution, the number of years of a presidential term is four years.
Further, he is seeking a declaration that on a true and proper interpretation of Article 66 (1) and (2) of the 1992 Constitution, “a person seeking a second presidential term must be a sitting president”.
Additionally, he wants a “declaration that on a true and proper interpretation of Article 62 of the 1992 Constitution, a former president of Ghana is not qualified to seek election as president of Ghana”.
Apart from Mr Mahama, the other defendants are the Attorney General, former President John Mahama and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.
Reacting to the suit on Class91.3FM’s 505 news programme on Tuesday, 13 June 2023, Mr Tameklo told Kwame Okyere Junior (KOJ): “There’s nothing bold about the step that he has taken”.
“I think that we need to be very serious in this country and stop glorifying idiocy”, he noted.
“You see, people have decided to take this constitutional democracy for granted and, so, they have decided, as it were, to try their misadventures everywhere”, Mr Tameklo pointed out, adding: “We should not glorify it all. I saw it to be extremely useless”.
