Sammy Gyamfi was not addressed by Jean Mensa; instead, she posed her own inquiries – Edudzi Tameklo

A member of the legal team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has taken on the Chair of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC), for the recent reply purported to be responding to concerns by the National Communications Officer of the opposition party.

According to Mr. Tameklo, the supposed response from Jean Adukwei Mensa did not address the concerns raised by Sammy Gyamfi.

“The EC didn’t respond to Sammy Gyamfi,” the legal practitioner said on TV3‘s New Day on Monday, June 5.

“Jean Mensa set her question for herself and proceeded to answer it. She might be a very bad student.”

This comes on the heels of the dismissal by the EC of allegations made by Mr. Gyamfi concerning the impending by-elections in Assin North Constituency.

He had alleged that the EC is colluding with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to insert the name of one Charles Opoku in the Assin North voter register just for him to be the party’s candidate for the June 27 by-election.

“Our unimpeachable sources have revealed that contrary to the clear requirement on the nomination form for the Assin North by-election, which demands that a candidate in the election must be a registered voter in Assin North, the said Charles Opoku is not a registered voter in the Assin North Constituency,” Sammy Gyamfi alleged.

But the EC responded thus: “For the records, the EC has not received any such request from the NPP to transfer the votes of any person. This allegation is false and a figment of the author’s imagination. As usual, it is aimed at maligning the integrity of the Electoral Commission.”

Mr. Tameklo said the concerns expressed by his party’s National Communications Officer were about CI127, which forbids the transfer of registration of any voter less than 42 days before elections, and not about Charles Opoku’s eligibility to contest as a candidate.
