MPs’ lives are at danger due to a trend whereby projects are only carried out during by-elections – Fred Agbenyo

A member of the communications team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fred Agbenyo, has said the situation where development projects are undertaken in a particular place only when a by-election is in place must stop.

In his view, such a practise puts the lives of all Members of Parliament (MPs) in danger.

Speaking on the Big Issue on TV3 Friday, June 2, he explained that some people entertain the idea that their communities can only develop when there is a by-election; therefore, they should kill their lawmaker.

Fred Agbenyo was speaking on the situation where some earth-moving equipment was spotted in the Assin North Constituency in the Central Region after the date of the by-election was announced.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) announced on Wednesday, May 31, that the much-anticipated by-election in the constituency will be held on Tuesday, June 27.

On Thursday, June 1, reconstruction of some roads in the constituency was visible.

Media General‘s Thomas Cann reported, however, that residents claim no amount of “lies” will convince them to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Others are also happy that the advent of the by-election has resulted in the reconstruction of the roads.

“We need development, so if it is coming because of the by-election, we are happy,” one said.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has served notice that James Gyakye Quayson will be retained as its candidate for the by-election.

The party is settling on the ousted MP to clinch re-election and continue with his duties.

The NPP, on the other hand, says it will win the elections hands-down, like it did on Tuesday, May 23, in Kumawu.
