Duffour called to congratulate me – Mahama

Dr Kwabena Duffour, the former flag bearer aspirant of the main opposition National Democratic Congress’ (NDC), who pulled out of the contest on the eve of the elections, has congratulated the winner and flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama.

“Last night Dr. Kwabena Duffour called to congratulate me for emerging victorious in the May 13 NDC presidential primaries,” the newly-elected flagbearer of the NDC disclosed in a Facebook post on Tuesday, 16 May 2023.

Mr Mahama noted: “Mayor Kojo Bonsu also congratulated me earlier on Saturday.”

He further reiterated his calls for cooperation in the NDC.

“As I stated in my acceptance speech in Tamale, the internal competition for f lagbearer is over. Cooperation is what we need to build the Ghana we want together,” Mr Mahama wrote.

Meanwhile, Dr Duffuor has refuted claims that he intends to withdraw his membership from the party.

According to him, he has no such intentions of leaving the NDC to form another party.

“I wish to state that I have no such intentions and remain committed to the NDC as I have always been,” Dr Duffour stressed in a statement.

He noted that: “The NDC is my home as it is for us all and I will always remain loyal to our party. Let us all come together towards the cause of victory for our party and progress for our nation.”

Mr Duffour indicated that: “When I joined the race for the flagbearership of the National Democratic Congress, I was motivated by a desire to see our party thrive as the political party of choice for every Ghanaian.”

He added that: “Today, that motivation remains unchanged.”

Dr Duffuor pulled out of the flag bearer race of the NDC at the last minute.

He told journalists on the eve of the Saturday, 13 May 2023, polls that he has been left with no choice than to take that route, as “I cannot contest in an election which is blatantly fraught with irregularities regardless of all my efforts to draw attention to save it”.

Dr Duffuor earlier filed an interlocutory injunction that sought to freeze the conduct of the primaries.

He later withdrew it from court paving the way for the polls to come off as scheduled.
