We can break the 8 without the help of Muslims or Northerners – NPP MP

Eugene Boakye Antwi, a Member of Parliament (MP) for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) representing the Subin Constituency in the Ashanti Region, claims that the NPP should focus its efforts on areas with a predominance of Akan or Christian residents rather than Muslim or “Northern” areas because these areas have historically supported the NPP and will do so again in the 2024 General Elections (break the eight).

Speaking on Friday, April 28, 2023’s Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Mr. Antwi stressed that there is verifiable proof to support his claim that the NPP has always been elected through the votes of Akans and Christians, not Muslims.

Mr. Antwi advised NPP delegates to support an Akan who is a Christian by casting their ballots, just as they did for previous Presidents John Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

He added that despite criticisms of his involvement in tribal politics, tribalism cannot be fully divorced from Ghana’s politics. “The empirical evidence is that we [NPP] derive our political power, support, authority, and existence from Akan-dominated or Christian-dominated areas of this country, and that’s a fact,” he said matter-of-factly.

In the race to lead the NPP, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the front-runner. He is a northerner and a Muslim, whereas Alan Kyeremanten, his closest rival, is an Akan and a Christian. The remarks made by Mr. Antwi have been taken as a criticism of Dr. Bawumia and a promotion of his chosen Alan Kyeremanten.

The attempts by Alan Kyeremanten’s supporters to use the religious and tribal cards will, however, destroy the chances of the NPP flagbearer, who is already rumored to be having difficulties.

It has been said that the NPP is an Akan party that will never elect northerners to its leadership. It has frequently retaliated. But Mr. Antwi’s remarks appear to support the notion.

Dr. Bawumia’s campaign to lead the NPP

The NPP’s rank and file has overwhelmingly backed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in his bid to lead the party into the 2024 general elections. In terms of support within the party, he is viewed as being in a close race with Alan Kyeremanten, who has previously run for the job.
