It’s evil to include pensioners in debt exchange programme – Presidential candidate hopeful

Founder and Leader of the African Reform Movement, Dr. Nii Amu Darko, has described as ‘evil’ and ‘illegal’ attempts by the Akufo-Addo-led government to include pensioners in the ongoing debt exchange programme.

The pensioners have resisted the move and have since February 6 been picketing at the Ministry of Finance insisting that they be excluded completely from the programme.

On Friday, February 10, former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, joined the pensioners to picket describing the attempt to include the pensioners as ‘wicked and illegal’.

Speaking to MG News on Monday, February 13, the presidential hopeful, Dr. Nii Amu Darko questioned why the aged should be made to pay if the government needs money.

“Where did the money go? Why is it that if money goes somewhere the vulnerable should be made to pay?”, he quizzed.

He insists the government cannot make pensioners pay “for your mismanagement”.

“It is just evil, apart from being illegal”, he added.

He explained the bondholders acquired the bonds under a contract with specified terms and that government cannot just vary the terms at will.
