Pupils of Kotokrom Municipal Assembly (M.A) A and B Basic Schools in the Sunyani Municipality have been forced to abandon their classrooms due to fear of contracting lung and heart diseases, as a result of dust emanating from the New-Dormaa-Kuotokrom-Yawhima stretch.
Some parents in an interaction with Suncity News, insisted they are not happy their wards are at home but can’t allow them to go to school because their health is at risk.
“We won’t allow our children to go to school because of the dust, we know it will affect their education but we can’t spend the little we end paying medical bills” a parent said.
During a visit to the school, the Suncity News team sighted some teachers in nose masks ready to teach, but the students were nowhere to be found.
The PTA chairman of the school, Mr. Mensah Samuel, revealed that they had to stop the children from going to school because the dust emanating from the road is too much for the children to bear.
Meanwhile, the assembly member of the area, Hon. Dramani Mahama disclosed to Suncity News that, a meeting was held on Wednesday with the MCE, together with some stakeholders and authorities of the school to find solution to the problem , however at the end of the meeting, the parents were urged to provide nose masks for their wards and allow them to go back to school.
Speaking to the Municipal Chief Executive for the Sunyani Municipal Assembly, Hon. Ansu Kumi on Suncity Morning Show, he said the contractor working on the road has assured him of completing a part of the road to reduce the impact of the dust.
Meanwhile, as to when the road will fully be completed is not known.
Residents, commuters and drivers who ply the road have complained about the slow pace of work on the road and have made several calls on the government to facilitate for speedy completion of the road.
The New-Dormaa-Kuotokrom-Yawhima stretch is one of the busy roads in the Sunyani Municipality. The road links two capital cities of the Bono and Bono East Regions, Sunyani and Techiman respectively.
The New-Dormaa-Kuotokrom-Yawhima road has been in a deplorable state for about three years now due to the road rehabilitation project.
