President Akufo-Addo last night 30th October 2022 addressed the nation on the state of the economy following weeks of astronomical price hikes and the value of the Cedi taking a nose dive against the US dollar.
The President blamed Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war for their contributions to the current economic crisis facing the country. He also blamed speculators talking down about the Cedi and a two-minute audio on Whatsapp for the falling value of the Cedi against the US dollar.
Nana Addo further stated that his government will continue the 30% salary cut for himself, the Vice president, Ministers, and all government appointees until the end of 2023. He also stated that measures will be put in place to reduce the importation of certain goods that can be produced locally like Ceramics, poultry products, toothpicks, and rice among others. All measures will be subject to a review in May 2023 the President noted.
He concluded his speech by calling on Ghanaians to unite and rescue the economy. “Let us unite and rally around our republic, its institutions, and its democratic values and insist that under God we will emerge victorious from our current difficulties, for this too shall pass, as the battle is the Lord’s.”
Honorable Sam George reacting to the President’s address, like many other Ghanaians, was not impressed with the speech as he did not hear any tangible solutions to restoring the economy. He also questioned if there was a part two of the Nations address.
Sam George stated “dear President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, after ignoring our suffering for weeks, this is all? Another set of promises? Asking us to trust you who led us into this mess?”
He further added that there was something fundamentally wrong somewhere and asked if that was all the President could offer Ghanaians as a leader? “That the battle is the Lord’s? Did the Lord ask you to be incompetent and mismanage our economy? Is it the same Lord who you claim asked you to build a cathedral at a time pregnant women were delivering on the ground?”
Social media is buzzing with many expressing their views on the President’s address. Mainstream media is sure going to be full of dissecting and digesting the President’s speech for at least a few days.
