Akufo-Addo fell for trap of arrogance in his comment on threat to vote against NPP – Gyampo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo fell for the trap of arrogance when he made a comment to the effect that threats to vote against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) do not disturb him, a Professor at the University of Ghana Ransford Gyampo has said.

It was Professor Gyampo’s view that the President is sometimes calm and sometimes arrogant but on this occasion, he was arrogant in his response.

“The President is sometimes arrogant and sometimes calm, he was arrogant in the kind of response he gave,” Prof Gyampo said on the New Day show with Rolland Walker on TV3 Wednesday October 26.

President Akufo-Addo said he understands the duty he has to develop the country.

When his attention was drawn to the fact that some people have threatened to vote against the NPP because the government has not developed parts of the country as expected, Mr Akufo-Addo said on Kumasi-based Otec FM on Monday October 17 that “If you decide to vote for the NDC in the general election, it is your choice and that is not my problem. No one will force you to vote for someone.

“No problem. I am saying people make those kinds of threats; me they don’t frighten me.”

“Of course I understand the responsibility, we will deal with it, I will do the work” he stressed.

The President further said he takes full responsibility for the current economic difficulty but stated one cannot gloss over the external factors.

This is the first time the president has publicly owned up, as the country’s micro-economy continues to be challenged.

“I am the leader and I take responsibility,” Mr Akufo-Addo said.

The president was, however, optimistic, the economy will recover before he finishes his term “I hope the IMF support is concluded in the middle of November so we can feed it into our budget” he said.
