NPP sets up legal directorate to ‘educate’ members on disciplinary procedures

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has set up a Directorate for Legal Affairs to, inter alia, provide education on the internal disciplinary and grievance procedures enshrined in the party’s constitution.

The decision to set up the Directorate was taken by the National Executive Committee (NEC) at a meeting on Wednesday, October 5.

It is in pursuant to Article 10(7)(3) of the party’s constitution.

Consequently, a long-standing member of the party, Gary Nimako, has been appointed as the first Director to oversee the new directorate.

“The Directorate shall, among other things, be responsible for advising the General Secretary of the Party in the performance of his functions on legal matters affecting the Party including Members of the Party and ancillary matters of legal nature in the day-to-day administration of the Party,” a statement issued by the General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, said.

“The Legal Affairs Directorate is also tasked with the responsibility of coordinating the Party’s legal cases and resolving internal legal issues as and when they arise while providing education on the internal Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures enshrined in the NPP Constitution.”

The Director is expected to work in close collaboration with the Constitutional and legal Committee of the party.

The decision comes in the wake of concerns of breaches of the party’s code of conduct regarding next year’s primaries.

Despite the code banning outright campaign by any flagbearer hopeful, party members have mounted stages on party platforms to campaign for some known faces aspiring to lead the party into the 2024 elections.
