Fufu Pounders Association of Ghana threatened to embark on strike due to low salary

It is obligatory for any employer to treat their employees with respect and dignity. Employees are required to be provided with the right tools and equipment, a safe working environment, and proper compensation for the work they do. In the absence of any of these good working conditions, workers have various means to express their grievances to management. Among others, disgruntled employees could embark on a strike action to press home their demands.

Fufu Association of Ghana is the latest labor union who have threatened to lay down its tools if management refuses to increase its salaries.

Fufu is a Ghanaian delicacy enjoyed by people from nearly all tribes in Ghana. Despite the overwhelming craving for it, its preparations entail a lot of hard work. The mashing of the cooked cassava/yam and plantain into the fine, good-looking fufu comes with a lot of hard work, especially those that pound it for sale. Though there is a machine that makes the mashing of the cassava and plantain easier, scores of Ghanaians still opt for the one pounded in the mortal and pestle.

It is due to this that chop bar operators engage the services of strong-bodied men to pound the fufu for a fee. But the members of the Central Region Fufu Pounders Association of Ghana are not happy with their conditions of service and have threatened to go on a strike. In an interview with TV3, one of the disgruntled members bemoaned that they are paid a paltry sum of Ghs15 after a whole day of hard work. He stressed those in Accra earn way more than that, and if their employers do not increase their pay to Ghs 60, they will embark on a strike.
