NABCo trainees call nat’l conference over unpaid allowances

The NABCO Trainees Association of Ghana (NABTAG) will hold a national press conference on Friday, July 29 in Kumasi to express displeasure at the plight.

According to a statement signed by National President Dennis Opoku Katakyie on Monday, July 25, the press conference “is to report on the unbearable hardship suffered by trainees due to our unpaid stipends for the past nine (9) months and the silence of government over the permanent employment arrangement”.

The Nation Builders’ Corps programme, which began in 2018, was scheduled to end in 2021.

However, trainees were directed to stay on after Sunday, October 31.

Since then, they claim allowances have not been regular and most of them are suffering, especially in the face of the current economic crisis.

Government sources had claimed there were plans to absorb all trainees into the public sector ahead of the new programme YouStart.

“Our plea has only been that if the consultations are not yet completed, at least our nine (9) months arrears should be paid,” the statement said.

“The sort of hardship we are going through is unbearable and having to report to work amidst such distressing situation is too much to cope with.”

The press conference will be held at the Kumasi Culture Centre.

Already, the programme is scheduled to finally end on Wednesday, August 31, according to the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.
