GRA will be unable to collect e-levy due to an injunction application – Sammy Gyamfi

Sammy Gyamfi, National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) will be unable to begin e-levy deductions on May 1st due to the injunction application filed by the Minority at the Supreme Court.

On Tuesday, April 19, the Minority in Parliament filed an application with the Supreme Court to halt the implementation of the e-levy deductions.

In an interview with TV3, Mr Sammy Gyamfi, a private legal practitioner, stated, “We have applied for an injunction.” The return date for that injunction application is May 4th.

“The parties have been duly served, which means that until that application is moved and determined, the Ghana Revenue Authority cannot begin implementing the e-levy on May 1st.”
The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, previously stated that the e-levy would be implemented in May of this year.

“We had some meetings with the Controller and Accountant Generals Department (CAGD) and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), and they said right at the beginning of May they should be able to put their system together,” he told TV3’s Roland Walker in Parliament after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo delivered the State of the Nation Address on Wednesday March 30.

The E-levy was approved by Parliament on Tuesday, March 29, following the third reading in the House. During the second reading, the Minority walked out. They left after Mr Iddrisu stated that the NDC MPs are united in their opposition to the policy.

Contributing to the E-levy debate on the House floor, he described the policy proposal as punitive, adding to the “high cost of doing business in the country.”

“E-levy is the annoyance of annoyance tax,” he said, adding that “businesses are suffering under your watch.” We are united in our refusal to support and vote for the E-levy.”
