Amaliba believes that Assin North needs to be represented in Parliament

The National Democratic Congress (NDCDirector )’s of Legal Affairs, Abraham Amaliba, has stated that the people of Assin North will require representation in Parliament.

To that end, he stated that the Supreme Court’s restrictions on Member of Parliament (MP) James Gyekye Quayson are troubling.

“The people of Assin North need representation, and that is very important,” he said on TV3’s Key Points with host Dzifa Bampoh.

“Yes, there are some restraints on him that will not allow him to function as a Member of Parliament,” he added, “but he is still a Member of Parliament.” That is why I have stated that a by-election cannot take place until the substantive case has been resolved.”

However, the MP for Asante-Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, who was also on the show, stated that he is prepared to file a contempt of court application against Mr Gyekye Quayson if the embattled opposition lawmaker attempts to carry out any parliamentary function.

“Advise your client to appear in Parliament, and I will file a contempt application against him.”

“According to the order, you are not permitted to conduct yourself as a Member of Parliament.” Only a Member of Parliament can hold Job 600. So, I’m saying, let’s put the law to the test. Tell your client to come, and I’ll file a contempt application and let the court decide if I’m wrong.”

On Wednesday, April 13, 2022, the Supreme Court issued a 5-2 majority decision ordering Mr Gyekye Quayson to resign as a lawmaker.

Justices Agnes Dordzie and Nene Amegatcher voted against it, while Prof. Henrietta Mensah Bonsu, Mariama Owusu, Gertrude Torkornoo, and Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi supported it.

Mr Gyakye Quayson was previously ruled ineligible to contest the December 7, 2020, Parliamentary Elections by a Cape Coast High Court presided over by Justice Coram Kwasi Boakye because he held dual citizenship before picking nomination forms from the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC).

As a result, new elections were ordered to be held, and Mr Gyakye Quayson was asked to step down as MP.

However, prior to the Supreme Court’s decision, the man accused of having both Canadian and Ghanaian citizenship was allegedly going to Parliament to participate in the proceedings.
