The Ghana Education Service (GES) has asked the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to investigate allegations of corruption in this year’s Senior High School placement processes.
Some GES and Ministry of Education officials have been accused of accepting bribes of up to GHS 7,000 to place students in their preferred schools, circumventing the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).
In a letter addressed to the NIB, Prof. Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, Director-General of the GES, stated that the GES will fully cooperate in determining the truth behind these claims.
“Management of the Ghana Education Service would be grateful if your office could launch a full-scale investigation into these allegations to determine their authenticity or otherwise,” the letter stated.
The Ministry of Education has also warned that personnel from the Computerized School Selection and Placement System who are caught accepting bribes to place prospective first-year Senior High School students in their preferred schools will be prosecuted.
Meanwhile, the School Placement Resolution Centre in Accra claims to have resolved approximately 95% of the issues brought before it.
Nana Afrah Sika-Mensah, Deputy Coordinator of the Free SHS Secretariat, says they hope to resolve all outstanding issues by the end of next week.
“The numbers have shrunk dramatically, but we still need to address 90 to 95 percent of their issues.” We don’t have many problems.”
“If we are unable to resolve all issues by the end of Friday,” she said, “we may come around next week to take their issues and resolve them.”
