Member of Parliament for North Tongu Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC), particularly its members in parliament, must treat New Patriotic Party (NPP) members the same way they treat Assin North lawmaker James Gyekye Quayson.
Mr Ablakwa urged his party to deal with the three absentee NPP lawmakers, Kennedy Agyapong, Sarah Adwoa Safo, and Henry Quartey, who have been referred to the Privileges Committee by the Speaker.
He stated that the NPP is determined to hold a by-election in Assin North and that nothing will stand in their way.
“If there’s one thing President Akufo-Addo and his entourage deserve credit for, it’s their killer instinct.” They are dead set on holding a by-election in Assin North, and nothing will stand in their way.
“I hope this informs my own party’s future behavior, particularly how we deal with the three NPP absentee MPs, especially given that we have a much stronger and irrefutable constitutional basis to do so.”
His remarks come after the Supreme Court, in a 5-2 decision, barred Assin North Member of Parliament James Gyekye Quayson from holding himself out as a lawmaker.
Justices Agnes Dordzie and Nene Amegatcher voted against it, while Prof. Henrietta Mensah Bonsu, Mariama Owusu, Gertrude Torkornoo, and Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi supported it.
The Cape Coast High Court, presided over by Justice Coram Kwasi Boakye, previously ruled that Mr Gyakye Quayson was ineligible to run in the December 7, 2020 Parliamentary Elections because he held dual citizenship before obtaining nomination forms from the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC).
As a result, new elections were ordered, and Mr. Gyakye Quayson was asked to step down as MP.
However, the man accused of having both Canadian and Ghanaian citizenship is said to have gone to Parliament to participate in the proceedings.
Following the ruling, Mr Godfred Dame, the Attorney General, stated that Mr Gyekye Quayson must face the same fate as former New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Bawku Adamu Dramani Sakande.
Mr. Adamu Sakende was sentenced to two years in prison after being found guilty of false declaration of office, perjury, and deceiving a public officer.
He was convicted on three counts of perjury, false declaration, and deception of a public officer. He ran for the Bawku seat despite the fact that he had not definitively renounced his British citizenship.
Mr Godfred Dame stated, “I believe that there should be an even application of the law, an equal application of the law, the same fate that befell Adamu Sakande, who was not qualified at the time nominations were opened, and we all know what happened to him.” As a result, they declared him ineligible and removed his seat, demonstrating that the law should be applied fairly.”
