The Ghana Private Health Facilities Association has warned that the E-Levy will have a negative impact on their operations since they use mobile money services.
As a result, they want the government to change the policy.
“As hospitals, we pay for products and services using mobile money, thus our operations will be impacted just like any other Ghanaian or business.” Some of our patients pay with mobile money, and the E-Levy will make it more expensive for them,” said Frank-Torbu Richard, the association’s General Secretary, on the 3FM Sunrise Morning Show.
He went on to say that when it comes to initiatives like the e-Levy, history should be the driving philosophy.
He mentioned how the Rawlings administration worked closely with many stakeholders to successfully introduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) in 1998 after an unsuccessful effort in 1995.
Frank-Torblu was also perplexed as to why the town hall meetings that led to the passage of the e-Levy Bill were held in only six of Ghana’s sixteen districts.
“However, even though the E-Levy law has been signed by the President, the government can still find a way to amend it.” Frank-Torblu rebutted the claim that their suggestion to the government was late because the E-Levy Bill had already been passed and signed.
“It appears like the E-Levy will cure all of Ghana’s issues, but I don’t believe it is a panacea for our progress.”
On Tuesday, March 29, a one-sided Parliament passed the e-levy scheme after the minority staged a walkout.
On Thursday, March 31, President Akufo-Addo signed the bill into law.
Following the approval, Mobile Money agents said they had panic withdrawals.
