The made-in-Ghana badge is being stamped on a wide range of products proudly manufactured in Ghana, according to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-announcement Addo’s of the One District One Factory Initiative (1D1F).
He stated that out of a total of 278 1D1F projects in various levels of implementation in all sixteen (16) regions, 106 factories are currently functioning, 148 are under construction, and 24 are in the mobilization stage.
“Mr. Speaker, in order to bring the youth on board the 1D1F Programme, fifty-eight (58) out of the two hundred and eight (278) 1D1F Projects have been developed as enterprises fully owned by youth groups, with direct Government support,” he said in delivering the 2022 State of the Nationa Address in Parliament on Wednesday March 30. Between forty (40) and fifty (50) young people are stockholders in each of these 1D1F Youth enterprises.
“In addition, with direct government support, five (5) medium-scale state-of-the-art agro-processing Common-User Facilities (CUFs) have been constructed, which are owned by diverse groups of farmers whose farming operations had previously been hampered by a lack of processing facilities.” Dormaa West, Savelugu, Sefwi Akontonbra, Sekyere Central, and Tarkwa Nsuaem are among the five (5) districts where these farmer-owned businesses have been created. They cover the processing of oil palms, rice milling, and maize grits production.
“Mr. Speaker, a number of international vehicle manufacturing companies have established assembly plants in our country and begun producing automobiles for our market as well as the West African market. This positive progress has been aided by the well-defined Ghana Automotive Development Policy, which we released in August 2019.
“Toyota and Suzuki automobiles have been manufactured here since June 2021, with the Hilux Pickup and Swift models being the first to be produced.” VW and Sinotruck, both of which began commercial operations in 2020, have continued to construct their brands of cars and have received strong local support.
“In addition, Nissan has opened a new state-of-the-art assembly factory in Tema with a capacity of 5,000 new vehicles per year, which is now building Nissan and Peugeot vehicles for the Ghanaian and West African markets.” This new factory in Tema will be commissioned tomorrow, and I am looking forward to it. Three more automakers, KIA, Hyundai, and Renault, are planning to start commercial production this year.
“Our national iconic automotive brand, Kantanka, created by Kantanka Automobile Company Ltd., has also increased manufacturing of its made-in-Ghana vehicles, including the Nkunimdie SUV, Omama Pickup, Onantefo 4×4, Otumfuo SUV, and K71 Small SUV models.”
