The former Communication Officer for the opposition National Democratic Congress in the Tano North constituency of the Ahafo Region, has admonished the Members of Parliament of Ghana, to strictly heed to the consistent cries of their constituents regarding the Electronic Transaction Levy Bill in Parliament.
Mr Yaw Ansah, in his view, believes that the people of Ghana have consistently spoken against the implementation of the ‘momo’ tax which was being announced at the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 during the presentation of the 2022 budget by the Finance Minister, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta.
After the announcement and the subsequent introduction of the Electronic Transaction Levy Bill in Parliament, in an attempt to debate on it and for a possible passage of the Bill in December, there was an unprecedented brawl amongst Members of Parliament when an attempt was made to cast a vote on it to determine whether to accept the Bill or to reject the Bill which led to the presiding Speaker adjouned sitting sine die.
Commenting on the incessant brouhaha of this intractable economic decision, Mr Yaw Ansah, the former Constituency Communication Officer and a business man, called for the wrath of Allah upon any Member of Parliament who defies the hue and cry of his constituents to vote for the passage of this insensitive levy.
”May Allah curse any Parliamentarian who accepts the E Levy for his constituents and still demand for votes” he said.
Mr Yaw Ansah sighted of a number of taxes such as the COVID tax, the Sanitation tax and the other new taxes that were introduced by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia led NPP government in the 2021 year budget as captured in paragraph 593 of the 2022 budget statement which have not been accounted for their purposes.
”More taxes were introduced in the 2021 budget but the government has deliberately failed to account to us on how much monies have been accrued and the amount invested in its intended purposes a year after the introduction of these several taxes” he added.
According to Mr Yaw Ansah, the cost of doing businesses in Ghana continues to rise at each passing day, leading to a higher economic hardships in Ghana to be born by the ordinary poor Ghanaians at the expense of the President and his appointees who continue to enjoy the taste of an opulent lifestyle.
Mr Yaw Ansah urged the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia led NPP government to consider the enormous businesses that will be affected by this intractable E Levy, including their possible collapse, to listen to the voice of the general public to permanently withdraw this bill from Parliament to relieve the ordinary Ghanaian entrepreneurs from folding up their young businesses.
