NDC is the pace setter in Ghana’s democracy – Deputy Minority Whip

The Member of Parliament for the Banda constituency and the deputy minority chief whip has stated that the National Democratic Congress is the pace setter in Ghana’s democracy.

The deputy minority chief whip made this comment in an interview on Tuesday, after the resumption of Parliament.

The Parliament of Ghana on Tuesday, January 25, resumed from the long christmas break after the House was adjourned sine die following an unprecedented brawls between the minority Caucus and the majority group on the discussion and possible passing of the controversial electronic transaction levy bill – known as the E levy.

Commenting on the E levy, the deputy minority chief whip, Hon Ahmed Ibrahim blamed the majority leader and his government for their failure to heed to good counsel on the subject of the E levy.

”The majority leader and his side have refused to engage with various stakeholders and the general public to solicit for their views regarding government’s intention to make a major financial policy.

Hon Ahmed Ibrahim added that ”you cannot pass a major policy such as this without consulting the people because ‘Democracy is the government of the people, by the people and for the people’ and not for ourselves as MPs”.

According to the deputy minority chief whip, the Speaker of Parliament has consistently admonished the majority leader and his side to broadly engage with the minority and the other stakeholders but they have blatantly refused to heed to his advice.

”The NDC is the pace setter in Ghana’s democracy and i do not know why they do not want to engage us in such a major financial policy such as the E levy” he said.
