Some Ghanaians need cutoff time for SIM card re-registration expanded

Some customers of telecommunication networks operating in the country are calling on the government to extend the period for the SIM card re-registration exercise.

Various centres of the telecommunication companies have witnessed long queues as customers are racing against time to link their Ghana cards to their SIM cards.

This is because the government has set March 31, 2022, as the deadline for the re-registration.

Some Ghanaians in a Citi News interview indicated that an extension would help ease tensions at the various re-registration centres.

They also complained about the amount of time used in registering a person.

“A lot of people have just been rushing here, but I think if there are a lot of people who do the registration, it will help because they spend almost 45 minutes to one hour on one person,” one of the aggrieved customers said.

“Just look at the number of people who have massed up, and this is making the exercise very chaotic and unregulated. I think an extension will ease the tensions to enable everyone to get his SIM card registered,” another customer lamented.

Meanwhile, some also feel the process is even unnecessary because they gave out biometric information while registering for the Ghana Card.

Though it is unclear what is accounting for the long queues, Citi News sources say the system provided by Kelni GVG to facilitate the exercise has been fraught with challenges.

The long queues have also been attributed to the limited number of branches of the telcos for the exercise.
