The Department of Children in the Bono East Region on December 8, 2021 has intensified awareness on child abuse at Nsuta in the Techiman Municipal of the Bono East Region.
The programme which was held under the theme; child protection violation amid COVID 19 pandemic is aimed at creating awareness on protection of a girl child, and also educate parents on their responsibilities.
The principal programmes officer for Department of Children in the Bono region, George Yaw Ankamah explained that the dreadful coronavirus pandemic seemed to shift attention from the fight against child abuse hence the need to intensify campaign on child protection. He expressed his excitement over the warm reception of the chief and people of the community and their support to ensuring the department achieves its target.
Mr. Ankamah added that the issue of child abuse has extensively been discussed with the community and was hopeful parents join fight against the menace.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Angela Kanga who spoke for the Department of Children at the Bono East Regional Coordinating Council advised parents to be responsible and have personal relationship with their children. She again called on children to obey their parents and adhere to counsel.
Family head of the Nsuta royal family, Nana Kwadwo Gyakyi wants the laws on child abuse reviewed to ensure perpetrators are brought to book. He is calling for stricter punishment for nonconformists of the law. He however commended the child protecting agency for the good work done and wished that the exercise be repeated at least every three months especially in the rural areas.
Some of the parents who were present at the program expressed their gratitude to the department for their immerse support in raising responsible children.
