The Techiman North District Chief Executive, Mr. Everson Addo Donkor has honored the maiden national best farmer with cutlass, soaps, assorted drinks and an envelope with an undisclosed amount of money.
Mr. Thomas Ahima, a native of Offuman in the Techiman North District of the Bono East Region was the first to be awarded as National Best Farmer in Ghana by the late former President Jerry John Rawlings in 1986.
Mr. Addo Donkor visited Mr. Ahima at his residence and while presenting the items noted that the gesture was to acknowledge his tremendous contributions made to the Agriculture sector.

He added that the country would forever remember his efforts in setting the pace in the industry for generations.
Mr. Thomas Ahima was excited to be remembered after 37 years of being awarded as the National Best Farmer and charged all Ghanaians especially the youth to venture into Agriculture to uplift the image of Ghana.
The National Farmers Day Awards were instituted in 1985 by the PNDC government to honour farmers and fishermen in recognition of their positive response to the government’s call for increased food production following poor agricultural yields in 1982 and 1983 caused by an unprecedented incidence of bush fire.

In December 1986, when the first winner of the National Best Farmer Awards walked home with a preset radio, two machetes and a pair of wellington boots at Osino in the Eastern Region, the prizes were considered enviable.
