The Tano North Municipal Assembly, Ahafo Region, has lauded the work of local farmers who have contributed to the sustenance of society, during this year’s Farmers’ Day celebration.
The 37th farmers’ Day Anniversary was held at Yamfo-Roman Catholic School park- under the theme; “Planting For Food And Jobs-Conslidating Food Systems In Ghana.” Nana Adu Baah, Yamfo Manhene and President of Ahafo Regional House of Chiefs was the Chairman for the occasion. In attendance were Traditional and Religious leaders, the Heads of the Security services, Departmental Heads, Presiding Member, Assembly Members, Representatives from Newmont Ghana Limited, Representative of the Member of Parliament, and other notable dignitaries.
This year’s Farmers’ Day Celebration was organized under the auspices of the Municipal Assemby with support from Newmont Ghana Limited and Dr. Gideon Boako (Economic Adivisor and Spokesperson, office of the Vice President).

The Chairman for the occasion, Nana Ansah Adu Baah in his acceptance speech thanked farmers for their enormous contribution towards the development of the Municipality, Region and Ghana at large, and pleaded with farmers to eschew bad farming practices that had the tendancy to pollute the environment.
In a speech, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Tano North, Hon. Ernest Kwarteng, used the opportunity to thank everyone for supporting him and the government.
Speaking on the theme: “Planting for Food and Jobs – Consolidating Food Systems in Ghana,” the Municipal Chief Executive intimated that, Planting for Food and Jobs is one of the flagship programmes of the NPP government led by His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Under the programme this year, a total of Two Thousand, Two Hundred and Ninety-Five (2,295) Maize and Rice farmers in the Municipality made up of One Thousand Six Hundred and Fifty-Seven (1,657) Males and Six Hundred and Thirty-Eight (638) Females have been supplied with improved seeds. The Municipality with the help of the Modernizing Agriculture in Ghana (MAG) programme, has also given Six (6) rice harvesters to three rice farmer groups at Adrobaa, Tanokrom and Duayaw Nkwanta.

The government under the Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) programme has supported farmers in the Municipality with Three Thousand (3,000) cashew seedlings and One Thousand (1,000) coconut seedlings.
The Municipal Chief Executive further announced that as part of the Government’s railway development agenda, processes for the construction of the proposed Central Spine Railway Line (Kumasi-Paga) to connect Kumasi, Sunyani, Tamale and Paga has commenced and therefore called on communities along the Kumasi-Sunyani Highway to expect engineers and other field workers in their communities to begin stakeholder/community engagements. Finally, the MCE thanked the farmers and assured them that the NPP Government prioritizes their needs and will continue to support them.
The MCE, Hon. Ernest Kwarteng accompanied by Nananom and other dignitaries inspected exhibits.
Mr. Isaac Nkrumah from Susuanho took the second runner up position with prizes such as wellington boots, cutlasses, key soap, wax print, fertilizers and a motorbike. Madam Faustina Adjei from Buorkrukruwa was the first runner up and received Items such as wellington boots, cutlasses, key soap, wax print, fertilizers and a medium cargo tricycle. Mr. Stephen Kyeremeh from Terchire was adjudged the overall best farmer. He received prize items such as wellington boots, cutlasses, key soap, wax print, fertilizers and a large cargo tricycle.
