Jaman South is noted for Cashew crop cultivation and we in NDC welcome the announcement made by the CEO of Tree Crop Development Authority,(TCDA) Mr William Agyepong Quaittoo that, government will be fixing producer price for Cashew nuts for the 2022 crop season in December.
The pricing of Cashew nuts by government is expected to bring about some form of relief to our farmers who have taken bank loans to maintain their farms for all these while without any financial gains made so far from the sales of their cashew nuts since the Nana Addo led government took over the reigns of affairs of this country in January, 2017.
In 2016, the price of cashew nuts per a kilo was GH₵9.00 (GH₵900 per bag) but has declined to an average price of GH₵4.00 per kilo (GH₵400 per bag) in 2021.
We therefore expect government to fix the price of Cashew nuts per kilo at GH₵10.00 (GH₵1000.00 per bag) to help cushion our farmers in this difficult time. Any thing less than this is an exercise in futility.
Data from Ghana Shippers Authority and Ghana Export Promotion Authority indicated that in 2019/20, the country exported 394,452 tons of raw cashew nuts valued at US$237,889,169 yet the farmers who produced the cashew nuts have remained poor due to government inability to offer better price for the farmers.
Cashew farmers should be rest assured that, there are better days ahead and the future NDC government will still set up ”Cashew Development Board rather than the Tree Crop Development Authority(TCDA) established by this government in order to give cashew farmers better price for their produce.
With this opportunity the NDC will like to remind government that Jaman South is yet to benefit from its 1District, 1Factory policy which we were promised prior to the 2016 general elections. We are therefore appealing to government to establish a cashew factory in Jaman South to create employment for the youth.
We hope government will for once take the plight of our farmers serious by announcing a heart-warming price for the raw cashew nuts to cushion farmers from this excruciating economic conditions bedeviling our hard-working farmers.
