I read with dismay the call by Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia on H.E. John Mahama to convert into Islam since the latter was such “a brilliant Islamic scholar”.
I want to believe that the platitude was one of numerous jokes Bawumia normally cracks anytime Mahama dazzles him at an event. Yesterday’s event at the Maulid was no exception as Mahama once again, proved his dominance among Muslims.
We were here when on several occasions Bawumia visited churches to have pastors pray for him. He on such occasions, recited Bible verses to attract the Congregation. May be, it is time Bawumia converts to a Christian since by his assertion, reciting any verse from a religious book depicts allegiance to the particular religion.
We in the Muslim community know that, John Mahama is a Christian and we are very much comfortable with that. As someone who aspires to assume the political leadership of this country which is secular in nature, we know of the set of principles that need to guide him as a President. We don’t expect him to be a Christian or a Muslim to enable him deliver on the needs and aspirations of the people.
What is Bawumia’s point? Was he trying to parry off the shame brought to him by John Mahama’s religious liberality? What is the big deal about a Political leader’s religious affiliation?
On an occasion of a Maulid organized by no less a person than the National Chief Imam to drive home the need for unity and religious tolerance, it was a huge spite in the face of his Eminence the Chief Imam for Bawumia to make such a statement of religious bigotry.
It is on record that, under the watch of vice president Mahmoud Bawumia, seven able bodied Muslim men were shot dead in Kumasi and never did he(Bawumia) utter a word in pursuit of justice for the innocent Muslims.
We have a Muslim vice president under whose watch five muslims were shot dead and he(Bawumia) never saw it fit to seek justice for those innocent Muslim Umma. How concerned is he about Islam?
It is important we advise Bawumia to note that, such divisive comments can cause disaffection for him amongst the Christian community and therefore must endeavor to desist from same.
Finally, we in the Muslim Community do appreciate the dexterity of President John Mahama in reciting all the Holy books which indicates his commitment to serving a society of diverse religious background. As Muslims therefore, we owe it a duty to encourage others to appreciate each other’s religion to promote peaceful coexistence in Ghana. Thank you.
