An eight-year-old boy has been shot dead with two others in critical condition during a festival at Awutu Beraku in the Awutu Senya West District of the Central Region.
The victim, according to reports, was aiding his disabled brother on a wheelchair along the road when the bullet hit and killed him instantly Monday morning.
Two others were also hit and are in critical condition after men following the chief priest fired the gunshots.
The incident occurred on the Awutu Bereku Durbar grounds when the Chiefs and Elders were ‘purifying the gods’. They were pouring libation through the principal streets of the community when the gun was shot.
Some of the angry residents said the unfortunate incident was as a result of negligence on side of the gun-wielding men.
According to them, they warned the chiefs not to celebrate the festival due to COVID-19 measures but the chiefs ignored their caution.
The deceased’s uncle, Joe Mensa, has expressed shock over the news.
The victim was the only son of his mother.
The body has been since deposited at the Winneba Special and Trauma Mortuary for Preservation and autopsy.
Police in the area is investigating the matter with no arrests made so far.
