The NPP gov’t is persecuting Dr Opuni for political reasons – Charles Akowuah

Mr Charles Akowuah Tuffour, the Regional Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress in the Bono Region has alleged that the ruling New Patriotic Party is resolved to persecute the former Chief Executive Officer for COCOBOD for mere political reasons.

The Attorney General this week, filed a case at the Supreme Court seeking review on the Supreme Court’s 3:2 ruling that removed the High Court Judge, Justice Clemence Honyenuga from continuing a trial case between the State and Dr Stephen Opuni and others.

According to the argument put forth by the Attorney General, ”reconducting the case with a new Justice will cause the state a huge money, hence expensive” and prayed the Supreme Court to reconsider its earlier decision and set it aside to allow Justice Clemence Honyenuga to continue with the trial case.

But the Bono Regional Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress disagrees with the argument by the Attorney General and entreated the Supreme Court to affirm its earlier ruling.

Mr Charles Akowuah Tuffour described the argument by the Attorney General as ”inhumane”.

According to Mr Charles Akowuah Tuffour ”there is only one conclusion that I have arrived on, that the NPP government, led by the AG, is pursuing a personal vendetta against Dr Opuni, obviously for political reasons. The posture of Godfred Yeboah Dame dipicts a man who desperately is determined to ensure that Dr Opuni is persecuted to satisfy the long wish of vindictive President Akufo-Addo and his government”.

Re – it will be expensive reconducting Opuni’s case – Attorney General

Could it be witchcraft or sheer wickedness that will make a man to wish this evil for his fellow man in this manner?

I read the story with the above headline and could not fathom why Lawyer Godfred Yeboah Dame will choose cost over justice in a high profile case involving the former Cocoa Board CEO, Dr Stephen Opuni.

Well, I’m not a lawyer, but wish to, from my layman’s point of view, vent my disappointment in Lawyer Godfred Yeboah Dame, the AG and his team of lawyers at the Attorney General office.

The decision of the AG to apply for review of the judgement in the case of the state Vrs Dr Stephen Opuni and others is shocking. It is recalled that, the Supreme Court of Ghana in a 3-2 majority decision, ruled for Dr Opuni in the case against High Court Judge Justice Clemence Honyenuga, which forbid him, the judge, from continuing with the case in the High Court. This was after lawyers for Dr Opuni successfully argued their case and proved that indeed the conduct of the judge poses potential biasness in the final determination of the case.

I was, however taken aback, to learn that evidence of same in circulation in the media of the AG challenging this progressive move by the Supreme Court. Kudos to the justices of the Supreme Court.

It is particularly disgusting to bear with the reasons the AG gave as basis for challenging the Supreme Court’s ruling in the case.

Amongst others, the AG thinks that it will cost the state some money if the case has to be continued by another judge instead of Clemence Honyuga. This thinking is inhumane especially, considering the fact that, Dr Opuni is standing criminal trial and could end up in prison in the unlikely event that he is found guilty of the crimes that he is accused of.

I want to know; will Godfred Yeboah Dame chooses cost over justice if the case involved his relative? Will he insists, that a judge continues with a case in the abundance of evidence to prove that the judge is bias? What makes Yeboah Dame has trust only in one judge, when there are other judges who have not dented themselves in anyway as far as this case is concerned?.

Will Justice Clemence Honyuniga be happy if his own son, who is working with SSNIT as Compliance Officer, be treated same way when he is sack from his office tomorrow?

Reference from Afoko brother’s case, the same AG, after three years, presented eleven witnesses in the case and while the case was almost due for judgement, the AG discontinued that case after financing for eleven(11 )witnesses from Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region to Accra and ends up throwing the whole three years of Afoko’s brother’s trial in a trush can.

Why did AG discontinue that case in the name of arresting a new suspect?

Atta Aye was arrested and sentenced whilst his other charges for other crimes were going on in the Court.

There is only one conclusion that I have arrived on, that the NPP government, led by the AG, is pursuing a personal vendetta against Dr Opuni obviously for political reasons. The posture of Godfred Yeboah Dame dipicts a man who desperately is determined to ensure that Dr Opuni is persecuted to satisfy the long wish of vindictive President Akuffo Addo and his government.

In spite of all these evil machinations, my faith in the Supreme Court Justices is unshaken, for I trust that the apex court of the land will not bow to the wicked tricks of the AG to course travesty of justice. It is evident that allowing Justice Clemence Honyenuga to continue with the case will do more damage than good to the case under trial. Dr Opuni deserves justice regardless how much it will cost the state. Justice should not be sacrifice on the alter of cost and expediency.

Would Justice Honyenugah be happy to have his son or relatives go through what he is taking Dr Opuni through?
Judicial ambush should not be entertained.
