The Chief Commissioner of the Ghana Girls’ Guide Association, Mrs. Abdul Zakiya Wahab, has urged victims of domestic violence, including beatings and issuance of death threats, to report all forms of abuse to her outfit or the Ghana Police service for redress.
She said most often, victims fail to report such issues due to societal norms and threats.
Mrs. Zakiya gave the advice in a press conference today in Accra following the recent spike of domestic violence against women and series of murder cases on women in the country.
She indicated that, victims of domestic violence of all forms of abuse were not reported to DOVVSU for fear that the perpetrators, particularly men, would be prosecuted or jailed.
She explained that it was not so because prosecuting or jailing the wrongdoers who were members of the family would aggravate the matter.
The Chief Commissioner said the unit rather invite perpetrators to solve the issues through Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) to bring peace and harmony in the affected family.
”When you come to us, tell us what exactly you want us to do for you because we are always there for you, do not be afraid”, she stated.
