Authorities of the Damongo Senior High school have taken delivery of two trucks of food items from the National Buffer Stock, with a third expected next week.
The food items are to resolve a food shortage that has hit the school.
The food items received include rice, beans, maize, tomato paste, Mackrell, oil, amongst others.
A food shortage hit the Damongo Senior High school this week, forcing authorities to abandon the scheduled menu, with students complaining that they were served reduced portions of food.
Speaking to the media whiles taking delivery of the food items, the Assistant Headmaster of the school in charge of administration, chief Dramani Kipo, said the delivered food items is enough to resolve the challenge.
“Though it wasn’t out of control, we were managing, but this has actually come to save the situation. I am even told by Friday we are expecting more, so this time we can actually feed them without any problem”
The Savannah Regional Minister, Saeed Muhazu Jibril, who delivered the food items on behalf of the National Buffer Stock blamed the situation on the failure of suppliers to deliver on time, and said measures will be put in place to prevent a recurrence.
“This school has that particular problem because the form 2 and 3 suppliers didn’t do the supply for the first semester, and the second semester is almost gone, so they have to rely on the supplies of some other students to feed the school, and when that happens to school will run short, but that has been resolved now by the Buffer Stock.”
Over 1,800 students at Damongo Senior High School were being underfed as the school was unable to provide them with enough food.
Some final year students said the shortage of food had worsened since May this year.
This resulted in some students relocating from the boarding house and commuting from their homes to school for classes.
