Oti Region: Narayana support system delivers free breast, cervical cancer screening in Nkwanta South

Narayan Support System is a non governmental organization that seeks to offer hope and spread happiness in Ghana. Lead by its Founder/Executive Director, Mr Narayana Osei-Nyarko, has successfully collaborated with St Joseph Hospital to deliver a free Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening in Nkwanta South municipal, within the Oti Region of Ghana.

The program started on the 9th of July and ended on 10th July, 2021. The 2 days event saw a huge turn out of women who showed up and got screened for Breast and Cervical Cancer. Overall, 361 women were screened.

The purpose of the screening was to help women within the municipality know their status and also help prevent cancer. According to Mr Narayana Osei-Nyarko, he took this upon himself to help prevent deaths caused by cancer, especially in women. He noted that his beloved grandma was a victim of breast cancer which she could not survive. According to him, his grandma’s breast cancer was detected only when it got to the fourth stage. He said he believes that if his grandma had gotten the opportunity to be screened earlier, her breast cancer would have been dealt with at the very early stages. This is what informed his decision to organize and sponsor the screening so that no woman will go through the pain and high cost involved in curing cancer.

Mr Osei-Nyarko also said, “It is my dream to build an ultra modern cancer clinic in Odomi, where my late grandma hails from in her honour. This clinic will operate as a charity when completed” Mr Osei-Nyarko is a Hindu by religion and believes in the ancient Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which literally means the whole world is one family. ” Treating others as you will treat your own family gives the highest pleasure, especially when others can smile and you are the reason behind their smile”. He added. Mr Osei-Nyarko is a real estate developer and an aspiring farmer.

The administrator of the St Joseph Hospital, Rev. Sis. Georgina Quayson said the hospital is always opened for such collaborations that will reduce financial burdens of patients. She expressed satisfaction in the heavy turn out for the screening and encouraged people to take their health serious so they can prevent themselve from being ill.

“The screening exercise would be carried out in other parts of the municipality. It will be a periodic exercise and not just one off”, Mr Osei-Nyarko said.
