Pressure group calls for amendment of constitution over authority given to president as commander-in-Chief

The Chapter Eight, (57) ( 1) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana says there shall be a President of the Republic of Ghana who shall be the head of state, head of government and a commander – in – Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces.

The Executive Director of Alliance for Sustainable Development and Participatory Governance, a pressure group in Techiman in the capital of Bono East Region, Nana Yaw Korang Antwi Boasiako has explain that, they only way to end insecurity and other security matters in the country is to amend chapter eight of the Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

Speaking on Ghana Akwantuo on Agyenkwa fm hosted by Bro Philip on Thursday, Nana Yaw Korang Antwi Boasiako said, power invested in the president to be Commender in Chief of the Armed Forces make the security personals powerless because they are abide by the command from the President to obey it.

Nana Yaw Korang Antwi Boasiako added that, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEE’s) are also appointed by the President and due to that, they automatically becomes the heads of security in their various assembles and security personals are to follow their command and instructions.

Additionally explained that, many of the MMDCES were from different occupational categories like Teachers, Farmers, Traders etc who knew nothing about security but becomes Chairman for Security force whenever they are appointed, how possible can the security personals work independently without any interferences.

Commenting on Ejura shooting Incidence, Mr. Antwi Boasiako pleaded on the government to invest in the security service in the country by providing tools and equipments for their work.

He also pleaded on the government to frequently organize security training for the security personals.
