The NDC in the Upper West Region has noted with great worry, the recent incessant misconduct by detached units of the Ghana Armed Forces, who have been deployed to various border points of the country to secure our territorial integrity in the wake of increasing terrorists threats.
The NDC is worried that, rather than securing citizens and boosting the confidence of natives of the Region that, the armed forces can secure our safety and security, some of these armed uniformed personnel have rather become the perpetrators of atrocious brutalities and have become a source of insecurity to a relatively calm and peaceful Region.
The two most recent dastardly acts of brutalities and unprofessional military conduct that has raised uneasiness in the region has been, the shameless molestation of an innocent young teacher by name Abdulai Ahmed in Wechau on Friday, 25th June, 2021 and the bizarre military invasion of some suburbs of the Wa Municipality in the Afternoon of today Thursday, 1st July,2021, to met out various degrees of atrocities on innocent citizens who are yet to unravel what their transgression is in this whole Rambo like display of military might.
It is our considered view that, what ever reasons that underpinned such invasions, are insipid, ludicrous and very much condemnable to no uncertain terms.
These incidents of gross misconduct linked with the rather worrying reports of unwarranted military killings in Ejura, Techiman and other parts of the country leaves an indelible scar of shame on a country which has before now been widely acclaimed as a citadel of democracy and good governance in Africa.
Against this backdrop, we stand in solidarity with the victims of these attrocities and people of the of the Upper West Region to call on President Akufo Addo ( The Commander – Chief of the Armed Forces), The Defence Minister, Chief of Defence Staff and indeed the High Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, to immediately offer an unqualified apology to the People of the Upper West Region. We demand, that, all the injured be given enhanced medical care at the cost of the Armed Forces and all the perpetrators of these acts be punished accordingly as a primary requirement to restore any sense of confidence in the detachment.
We reckon the recent escalated misconduct of security personnel as fruits of an impotent, wobbling and sleeping government that appears to have lost ideas in managing all sectors of the nation’s endeavour ranging from security to economic, social and welfare issues among others.
It is equally our ardent demand that, stringent measures be put in place to prevent the recurrence of such shameful acts.
We wish to add that, the NDC shall closely monitor how this story proceeds to a logical end.
Thank you.
Signed
Comrade Puo-Ire Prosper
