A sports journalist in the Eastern Region, Adam Shaibu of Obourba FM, has been reported dead after the vehicle he was traveling in got involved in an accident on Sunday, June 27, 2021, on the Nkawkaw-New Abirem road.
Baba Kankani, as he is affectionately called, was in the company of three others who were returning to Nkawkaw after covering a division 2 football match between Okwawu City and Okwahu United at Yayaso near New Abirem.
Citi News understands that the taxi in which they were traveling somersaulted several times after the driver lost control of the wheels.
The sudden demise of Baba Kankani has shocked the Eastern Regional media fraternity who are questioning the state of the Nkawkaw – New Abirem road which has been under construction for several years by successive governments.
The police have begun investigations into the cause of the accident.
Three of the occupants of the car, including the taxi driver who is in critical condition, are receiving treatment at the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital.
This adds to the numerous accidents that have occurred already this year, and taken many lives, while leaving several others injured.
1,000 persons killed in road crashes from January to April 2021 – NRSA
Road crashes have killed more than 1,000 people in the country from January to April 2021.
This was disclosed by Mrs. May Obiri Yeboah, the Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) on Thursday, May 20, 2021.
She said last year, 2,500 people died from road crashes, adding that the figure is the highest since 1991.
