In a democracy, every institution is subject to scrutiny and criticism and that the Judiciary is no exception – Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi

Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reacted to the referral of Dr. Dominic Ayine to the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council.

In a letter sighted by Masemtvgh.com on May 25, 2021, the respected Lawyer and Former Attorney General under the erstwhile Mahama administration, Dr Dominic Ayine, found himself in trouble after the Chief Justice, His Lordship, Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah reported him to the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council(GLC) for statements he purportedly made during a panel discussion on the 2020 Presidential Election Petition and its impact on the democracy of Africa which was organized by CDD-Ghana.

The petition by Chief Justice accuses Dr Ayine for questioning the independence of the Judiciary on the verdict of the 2020 Presidential Election Petition.

Lawyer Ayine was quoted to have said that the supreme Court failed to apply the due process including the serial dismissals of the petitioner’s applications in adjudicating the election petition.

However, speaking via zoom on TV3’s “The Key Point” this morning, Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi made it clear that they are going to fight to the best of their abilities to the end for Dr Ayine.

According to him, the fact that Dr. Ayine has been dragged to the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council for merely expressing his views on the 2020 Election Petition means another lawyer could be dragged there too for the mere expression of their views, hence the need for all of them to join and fight together within the confines of the Constitution for justice for all.

Several Ghanaians have also taken to social media to question the basis for the Chief Justice’s petition, with some asking whether the Judiciary as an arm of government, doesn’t want any form of criticism. The likes of Kwasi Prempeh, Professor Kweku Asare, Kofi Bentil of IMANI Africa, and several others, have also expressed their views on this development.
