Former President John Kufuor and Dr. Afriyie Akoto Put their Sister to Rest

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Minister for Food and Agriculture, will today, Saturday 5th June, 2021 bid a final farewell to their sister, the late Mrs. Cecilia Agyeiwaa Akoto Campbel. Mrs. Campbel passed away in April 2021, and would be laid in state at the Apagyafie, Ashtown in Kumasi, Ashanti region, Ghana.

The funeral is expected to be attended by prominent government officials, traditional authorities, political stalwarts and activists, legal luminaries, among others.

The late Mrs Cecilia Agyeiwaa Akoto Campbel, well known as Auntie Agyeiwaa, is a sister to former President John Agyekum Kufuor and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto. She was a lawyer, and married a renowned Jamaican lawyer called Campbel. Lawyer Campbell opened a law firm in Accra, and the President of the Republic, H. E Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo used to work at the firm. The law firm later became that of Akufo Addo Prempeh & Co.

The attached picture captures the wedding of Lawyer Agyeiwaa Akoto and Lawyer Campbell of Jamaica. The Bride’s father, OKyeame Baffour Osei Akoto is the one in a cloth with his arms folded. Next to Baffour Akoto is Owusu Sekyere commonly known as Doska, Baffour Akoto’s second oldest child.

Doska attempted a coup against General Ignatius Kutu Acheampong and fled to the UK. General Acheampong arrested Okyeame Baffour Osei Akoto for the “sins” of his son. And while under interrogation, Okyeame Baffour Akoto asked General Acheampong whether he, General Acheampong, informed his father when he settled on the decision to stage the coup which overthrew Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia on 13th January, 1972.

The General was left speechless by Baffuor Akoto’s question, so, he allowed him to go without any further questions. Suffice to say, Okyeame Baffuor Osei Akoto was arrested about six times under the regime of the Military Rule of General I. K. Acheampong.

Mrs Agyeiwaa Campbell, then Judge Campbell, also fled to the UK when Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings staged the 31st December, 1981 coup which overthrew former President Hilla Limann.
