Residents of New Town are on the run as soldiers besiege the town

Residents of New Town, one of the biggest and popular communities within the central business district of Sunyani, was serruptitiously engulfed with a number of soldires.

On Friday evening, the soldiers, who were ostensibly from the Sunyani Military Barracks and in their official bus, spontaneously captured the entire town with their canes, belts and other disciplinary equipment to devour the residents.

Reports say, these soldiers, who were visibly angry with a well rehearsed plan of action, immediately descended on these residents; mostly the males, without any discrimination. Any boy or man they met within New Town became a subject of target for that disciplinary beating exercise.

Most of these residents, who became victims that night, sustained varying degree of physical injuries with a number of them having a fractured bone.

Kofi Manu, a relative of one of the victims who suffered a fractured bone disclosed that his brother, upon taken him to the Regional Hospital in Sunyani on Saturday, was immediately referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi to undergo a series of surgeries.

”I received a distress call from a friend who informed me that my brother has been injured by some soldiers and that he has been sent to the hospital. When i went there, i saw a number of these victims at the hospital” he added.

Information gathered by Masemtvgh reveal that, about a month ago, a young man who recently returned from abroad was attacked at Akokora Kwadwom, a suberb of New Town by a group of people at a supposed ”wee base” who subsequently took over his mobile phone and an undisclosed amount of money from him.

It was gathered that, this person, after he has been attacked and robbed by the group, called his brother, who is a soldier at the Sunyani Military Barracks and led him to the base.

According to the report, a fight ensued between the soldier and the group and this soldier was severely beaten to the pulp and seriously assaulted by the group at the base.

This soldier, has been hospitalised after the incident until he unfortunately died on Friday, May 28 2021 at the hospital.
