Akufo-Addo’s “excesses are getting too much” and must be reined in – Minority Leader

Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu has accused the Akufo-Addo-led government of reducing the country to a police state.

According to him, the blatant infringement on the rights of journalists in the country by National Security operatives and the police is unacceptable and should be checked.

His comment was in response to the arrest and later abuse of Citi FM journalist, Caleb Kudah, by National Security operatives after he was caught filming abandoned cars left to “rot” in a National Security installation.

Haruna Iddrisu said, “Nana Addo Dankwah and his NPP government are reducing Ghana to a police state and that is not acceptable. The rights of journalists to film is to provide evidence of what they have seen and to report what is real and what is practical, what is wrong.”

He stated that the ruling government’s “excesses are getting too much” and must be reined in.

The Tamale South MP stated that the current happenings under the leadership of Akufo-Addo are rather surprising considering the President prior to winning power was a staunch promoter of human rights and freedoms.

“He probably was only preaching and preserving fundamental human rights and freedoms, only seeking office of president but not serving with respect for those rights and freedoms as president, that’s very disappointing,” he said.

He added that the brutish style in which the National Security officers had enforced their arrests was rather unfortunate and called for a better mode of operation.

“There is a way that the arrest could have been done, in the manner in which protects the dignity guaranteed in Article 15 of the Constitution. Must they treat them in that gestapo style as if they were raiding another Radio Gold?” he asked.

Caleb Kudah has since been released and has been recounting his horrifying ordeal at the hands of National Security operatives who he said assaulted him following his arrest.
