Prof. Naana leads women in empowerment session

The first of “Women in Leadership/Politics”, an initiative of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, was held at the Aqua Safari Resort in Ada a few days ago.

The overall aim of the series is to provide meeting spaces that support career pathways and cohort development among female leaders/politicians from diverse sector backgrounds through service learning, critical reflection, and networking.

A major objective of the project is to ensure the retention of women currently in parliament, while facilitating the interests of many more to join women in leadership positions in politics.

This workshop was facilitated and financed by the FES and NDC Leadership in Parliament; participants were drawn from the Women Caucus of the National Democratic Congress in Parliament, while consultants came from academia and political circles.

The sessions targeted the needs of women in parliament and encouraged active participation of everyone.

The subjects that informed the conversations were led by the following:

“Social Democracy in Action” – Dr. William Ahadzi (Ghana Institute of Social Democracy)

“Women in Power”- Dr. Georgina Oduro (Director, Centre for Gender Research, Advocacy and Documentation [CEGRAD], University of Cape Coast)

“Attributes of the Ideal Member of Parliament- Ms. Emelia Arthur/Hon. S. Okudzeto Ablakwa)

“Sharing Lessons in Balancing Relationships: Holding the Balance among Party, Parliament, Constituency, Home, Family and Friends” – Naana Jane  Opoku-Agyemang, RM, 2020 Elections

Budget and Bills: Deepening Understanding” -Hon. Isaac Adongo

“Designing Support” – Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang

“A History of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)” – Hon. Kofi Attoh, National Vice Chairman, NDC

“The NDC” – Hon. Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, National Chairman, NDC.

Participants were very appreciative of the initiative, with its semi-structured mode of the sessions that allowed for bonding, sharing of experiences, networking and, contributions to the content of future programs.

I am grateful to our dynamic female MPs for their impressive participation.

We would continue to offer support to many more women desirous of making a positive difference in our nation’s leadership narrative.
