The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress has said that, Parliament does not ran on the basis of fear of the leader of the majority group in Ghana’s Parliament.
The former three times Member of Parliament for Wenchi West Constituency and a former Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Hon Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, made this comment on Sunday, April 11, 2021, during an interview on Joy Tv’s program, the Probe, with Emefa Apawu as the host.
The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, who was seemingly fumed, on the recent statement, which was made by the Majority Group Leader of Parliament, quizzed on the basis for his statement.
The Majority Group Leader, Hon Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, last week on similar program, complained on how the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, through his appointment, has turned the Parliamentary Service Board, into an NDC enclave.
In a response to this claim by Hon Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, the General Secretary, in a rhetoric asked ”before Bagbin came, what was Parliament – was it an enclave of the NPP?”
”The Speaker was NPP, the former Member of Parliaments, who should serve on the Parliamentary Service Board, were from the NPP and i don’t want to believe that, the workers and advisors there were CPP” Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah added that ”so if they were all NPP at that time and now you have another speaker, i am now wondering whether Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, was expecting Bagbin, to appoint his opponents to advice him. We are talking about advisors, people choose their advisors”.
According to Mr Asiedu Nketiah, he least expected Mr Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, to raise this issue and complain about it because he is guilty of it and must build credibility in his comments.
”I didn’t expect Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, who was all over the place, when we were accusing the President of nepotism in his appointment, Kyei-Mensah Bonsu, was all over the place saying that did we expect the President to appoint his enemies as ministers”?
To Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah ”if you didn’t expect Nana Addo to appoint his enemies as ministers, why do you expect Bagbin to appoint his enemies as advisors?”
When asked by the host on the supposed perception of fear expressed by Hon Kyei-Mensah on the appointment of the General Secretary of the NDC onto the Parliamentary Service Board as the plausible basis of his fear, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah immediately brushed off that assertion as without any legal backing.
”Who said that Parliament is ran on the fears of Kyei-Mensah? He has copies of the constitution and Standing Orders of Parliament so he should be quoting to us, which rule is against this”?
According to Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah ”he, Kyei-Mensah, is not communicating to anybody. He is just expressing his fears but unfortunately, Parliament is not ran on the basis of fears of Kyei-Mensah Bonsu – it is ran by the law”.
