Revolution found leadership in Rawlings – Mr Anane Adjei

A pioneer member of the Committee for Defense Revolution (CDR), in the Bono Region has emphasized on the importance of cadre in the National Democratic Congress and the the important roles played by the movement in Ghana’s socio-economic development.

In an interview with Masemtvgh in Sunyani on Monday, March 29, 2021, Mr Kwabena Anane Adjei recounted the history of cadre movement and how its formation found leadership in the late former president, Jerry John Rawlings.

Mr Kwabena Anane Adjei, who was a student at the University of Ghana in 1979, and an active member of the then student group,  progressive movement, underscored the exigencies of the country at that time to have a leader to liberate Ghanaians from the pepertual economic hardships.

”You cannot change a society with the same old institutions and that Ghanaians understood the need for change as activated and championed by students, market women and the ordinary Ghanaians”.

According to Mr Kwabena Anane Adjei,  cadre, which he gave the meaning as ”activist of revolution” was formed to provide the fertile grounds to inculcate into the youth, the sense of patriotism and to correct the ills, that have been perpetuated by few powerful people in the society.

”The Youth and Students Task Force was formed to carry cocoa beans from the farms to Accra for export at a time where these cocoa beans have been left for three years to almost rot”. This, he indicated, was led by the late former president, Jerry John Rawlings.

”At a difficult time where there were shortages of basic food items, such as sugar, soap and cloth, a lot of people had to join a long queue in order to get these items at a designated place called ‘eighteen’, a place where these items were sold”.

Mr Kwabena Anane Adjei eulogised the massive contributions and roles that were played by the likes of Prof. Kwasi Botchway, Lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata, and the others through their series of intellectual lectures on the university campus to prepare the way for a change in government at that time.

To Mr Anane Adjei, these individual persons, played a major role that made it possible for the students and the youth to support the need for revolution which, found leadership in a brave and courageous military officer, Jerry John Rawlings.
