Wiasekrom D/A Basic School appeals for tables and chairs

The Assistant Headmaster of Wiasekrom District Assembly Basic School, in the Tain District of the Bono Region, has passionately appealed to the government, through the Ministry of Education and the public for tables and chairs.

The Wiasekrom community, is a distant farming community, at the outskirt of Nsawkaw, the district capital of the assembly.

The Wiasekrom D/A Basic School, was established by the community in the year 2010, to give their kids access to basic education because there was no school which was closer to the community for the kids at such tender ages to attend.

Three years after the school was established by the community with wooden structures and bamboo, the district assembly, in 2013, constructed a three unit classroom block to replace these wooden structures.

Information gathered by Masemtvgh revealed that, the three unit classroom block by the assembly, is being used by the lower primary pupils, while the dilapidated wooden structures by the community, are being occupied by the upper primary pupils.

In an interview with the assistant headmaster of the school on Thursday, March 11, 2021, Mr Naburi Paul, disclosed to Masemtvgh, a number of challenges faced by the staff and pupils of the school.

”The school faces a number of challenges with the major one being the lack of tables and chairs for pupils”. The assistand headmaster further stated that ”the tables and chairs that were supplied by the assembly eight years ago to the school,  have all been broken down”.

A class three teacher stated that ”six pupils in my class have to share two tables and two chairs”. To this teacher, teaching and learning has been difficult in the school, especially at a time we are to observe social distancing in this pandemic era, due to lack of tables and chairs.

A female staff of the school, noted that the absence of school feeding program in the school, discourages more school going children in the community from attending the school. ”The school has a total population of ninety six pupils but if the school can be enrolled onto the school feeding program, more of the children at home will be coming to school”.

In a brief interaction with Mr Eric Addai, the Assembly Member of Wiasekrom Electoral Area, admitted to these challenges of the school and indicated the steps he has taken to address them.

”We initially appealed to the parents to buy tables and chairs for their school children but that did not work because, most of these parents are peasant farmers who cannot afford them”. The assembly member, on behalf of the school, appealed to the district assembly, individuals, groups and organizations, to support them with tables and chairs for the school.
